As 2025 draws to a close, we took the opportunity to sit down with Tony Watson, Head of Operations, and John McConnell, Head of Strategy, to reflect on Elmwood Protection Services’ first year in business. From operational challenges to strategic wins, here’s what they had to say.
Q&A with Tony Watson and John McConnell
Q: Starting a new company from scratch must have been operationally a tough challenge. How do you reflect on that?
Tony Watson:
“Starting a brand-new company was indeed a challenge. We had to ensure our team members were ready to deliver from day one, which meant putting robust operational procedures in place to make the transition from working under the H&J Martin Group brand to Elmwood Protection Services as seamless as possible. It hasn’t always been easy, but John, Kieron, and I are delighted to be working together to make Elmwood Protection Services the best it can be.”
Q: Whilst you haven’t been open for a full year yet, how has the strategy of Elmwood Protection Services progressed?
John McConnell:
“We’ve had a fantastic first year. We were fortunate to win contracts with Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council. We’re working diligently to service these contracts and are grateful to have secured them. Our strategy is rooted in growth, and I’ll continue to work tirelessly to deliver that growth in a sustainable way—ensuring that every project we win is managed to a standard that makes both us and our clients proud.”
Q: What has been your proudest achievement in year one?
Tony Watson:
“For me, it’s seeing the team come together and deliver exceptional service from day one. That level of commitment and professionalism is something I’m incredibly proud of.”
John McConnell:
“Securing major contracts in our first year is a huge achievement. It’s a testament to the trust our clients place in us and the hard work of the entire team.”
Q: What lessons have you learned that will shape year two?
John McConnell:
“Adaptability is key. The security industry moves fast, and we’ve learned that being proactive and responsive is essential to staying ahead.”
Tony Watson:
“Preparation and communication are everything. We’ll continue to refine our processes to ensure we’re always ready to deliver.”
Looking Ahead
As Elmwood Protection Services moves into its second year, the focus remains clear: delivering exceptional service, growing sustainably, and building strong partnerships. We’re excited for what’s ahead—thank you to our clients, partners, and team for making this first year a success.
